Elect a campaigner with an unrivalled record
Cllr. Mick Murphy has an
unrivalled record of fighting on
behalf of working class people in
this area. None of the other parties fight on the issues because they
don’t represent working people.
Unlike the Socialist Party, all the
main parties are funded by big
business and developers and
represent their interests in the Dail.
Cllr. Mick Murphy and Joe
Higgins TD are proud to represent
working people. Strong
representation is essential if issues
like the "race to the bottom",
privatisation of public services and
environmental destruction are to
be tackled. Like Joe Higgins, Mick
Murphy would only accept an
average worker’s wage as a TD
and would donate the rest to
community and working class
campaigns and the Socialist Party.
The Socialist Party will not prop up either Fianna Fail or Fine Gael in government. Labour, Sinn Fein and the Greens want to. They will forget about people’s needs for the trappings of office. We will use the Dail to fight on the issues and to start a new movement to represent the majority.
A history of taking on the political establishment
The main parties try to rob elections by making false
promises. But nothing changes for working people –
political corruption, planning for profit and crises in vital
public services continue as before.
Don’t let them away with it - you have the power to
strike back. Socialist Party Councillor Mick Murphy can
unseat one of the establishment TDs. Elect Mick to join
Joe Higgins in the Dail and strengthen the workers’ voice
and challenge to the political establishment. In his time as a campaigner and councillor Mick has:
• Fought the developer driven plan for apartment sprawl in Tallaght. All the others – Fianna Fail, the PDs,
Labour, Fine Gael, Sinn Fein and the Greens – voted for the developers’ greed over people’s needs.
• Fianna Fail on the one hand, and Labour and Fine Gael on the other make phoney promises about Tallaght Children’s Hospital. Mick Murphy tells the truth – only community pressure and action can force them to keep the hospital open;
• All the parties stood idly by as the council imposed the bin tax in 2004. It was Mick Murphy and ordinary residents who stood firm and for that Mick was sent to prison for 3 weeks;
• None of the parties or candidates seriously helps workers defend their conditions. Mick does. He exposed the €2.20 per hour wages and defeated the "race to the bottom" at Turkish construction giant GAMA.
Health Crisis and the Children' Hospital
Tallaght Hospital has never been given the resources, facilities and bed capacity that were promised. Now Fianna Fail and the PDs have decided to make the situation worse by closing the Children’s Hospital. Fianna Fail, Labour and Fine Gael all accept private health and support "for profit" competition in health insurance. That means healthcare will remain limited and the best care will go to those who can pay most.
We are fighting for an active campaign of the community and health workers to save the Children’s Hospital. Mick has organised the distribution of 10,000 petitions on the issue. Investment in Tallaght Hospital and overall investment in resources is urgently needed to end the crisis and to provide proper care for all who need it.
Developers' Greed
All the parties' councillors, except Mick Murphy, voted for the Tallaght Town Centre Plan which allows thousands more apartments. From this speculators will now try to profit while many ordinary people can’t afford a home. Instead the Council should use land to provide for the housing, facilities and leisure needs of the community. Meanwhile people in new housing and apartment developments lack public transport, schools, crèches, and shops.
Residents also suffer the rip-off of management charges - these must be scrapped for all houses and duplexes. Only genuine costs of upkeep of common areas should be paid by apartment dwellers. The Socialist Party says that we must plan for people’s needs, for sustainable planning. No permission for new developments shoudl be given until all necessary infrastructure is in place. There should be no more high rise developments in Tallaght village.
Transport Chaos
A proper public transport system, like in many European cities, is the only way pollution and
transport chaos can be tackled. As such, the LUAS line should be extended with stops at Heatherview,
Kiltipper, Allenton and Firhouse and the capacity should also be expanded.
100 new buses are needed for Dublin South West so that Dublin Bus can provide a much-enhanced service, including regular, express services to key locations in the city. The planned Metro from Tallaght to the city via Greenhills has been dropped from the government’s transport plan - this should be re-instated.
