The
Alliance Against Nice
The
'Alliance Against Nice' is made up of the following groups:
The
Socialist Party / The Green Party / Sinn Fein / Seamus Healy TD / Tipperary
Workers and Unemployed Action Group / The Workers Party / Socialist Workers
Party / Irish Socialist Newtwork / Independent Socialist Forum Against
Nice / Tony Gregory TD / Finnian McGrath TD / Mick O'Reilly (ATGWU)
What
Nice Really Means for Ordinary People
- Nice establishes
the command structure for a new European army called the Rapid Reaction
Force.
- It establishes
direct links between an EU military structure and NATO and calls for
a European wide arms industry.
- Government pledges
on Irish neutrality mean nothing. The government reneged on promises
for a referendum on the so-called 'Partnership for Peace' (PfP)
and are allowing the US military to use Shannon airport in the run up
to a military strike on Iraq.
- Nice calls for
"uniformity in measures of liberalisation" and entry into
the World Trade Organisation's General Agreement on Trade in Services
(GATS) and TRIPS agreements. This means the privatisation of public
services across Europe and a Europe dominated by multinational companies.
- Nice will concentrate
power in the hands of big states and further remove control of the EU
from ordinary people. Bigger states suchs as Germany, France, Italy
and Britain will increase their voting power over other states.
