Carmel Gates is the candidate who represents the interests of the membership of NIPSA as opposed to the interests of the bureaucratic machine that currently runs the unions.
She has been nominated by the NIPSA General Council (Executive Committee) and is supported by NIPSA activists right across the civil and public sector.

On Pay
The union bureaucracy has never conducted a serious campaign on pay. During the term time dispute they refused members the right to have a ballot for strike action and tried to get them to accept a sell-out deal.
Carmel Gates is the only candidate who:
- Has consistently
fought against low pay and for decent pay rises for all members.
- She actively helped the term time workers win their battle against the employers and the union bureaucracy
On Privatisation
The union bureaucracy have allowed whole areas of the publice service to be handed over to private companies without serious resistance. Jobs, pay and working conditions have all been eroded as a result.
Carmel Gates is the only candidate who:
- Has attempted to get NIPSA to launch a serious campaign to protect the wages and conditions of members and to call a complete to PFI, PPP and other forms of privatisation.
On Union Democracy
The union bureaucracy have consistently opposed giving the membership more say in the running of the union.
Carmel Gates is the only candidate who:
- Will continue to
live on her current salary and will donate the rest of her General Secretary's
salary - up to £30,000 difference - to labou and trade union causes.
- Supports the election
of all senior negotiating officials.
- Believes that all
officials should be on a workers' wage not on senior management salaries.
- Believes in shifting some of the union's resources from headquarters to the branches by allowing branches to hold funds for campaigning purposes.
