Book of Estimates:
New Round of Stealth Taxes Vindicates Anti Bin Tax Campaigns - A Fundamental Dishonesty at the Heart of Government Taxation Policy

By Joe Higgins, Socialist Party TD

THE NEW round of stealth taxes evident in the Government's Book of Estimates is a crushing vindication of the campaign being waged by the Anti Bin Tax groups in Dublin.

They have consistently pointed out how the bin tax was the thin edge of a very wide wedge of local taxes and other charges - all taxation by stealth.

There is a fundamental dishonesty in the Government's trumpeting about having a relatively low tax regime for workers, while in reality increasing the burdens on them through a plethora of stealth taxes.

The lack of support by the bigger opposition parties in the Dáil for the Anti Bin Tax Campaigns should be seen as a contributory factor to the arrogance of the Government in feeling it can pile on charge after charge with impunity.

In fact, the Anti Bin Tax Campaigns will continue to highlight the dishonesty and highhandedness of the Government by continuing their campaigns right up to the Local and European Elections.
