Barristers’ Fees of €1,000 Per Hour an Outright Scandal - Court Costs Used to Intimidate Working Class People

Socialist Party Councillor Clare Daly and Socialist Party T.D. Joe Higgins have been presented with a demand for a massive €33,280 court costs by Fingal County Council.

These costs arise from their protest against the bin when both were jailed for a month on September 19th last.

The costs demanded include fees for Senior Council James Macken of €7,500. Mr. Macken represented the Council in the High Court on September 17th and 19th. Considering that Mr. Macken spent no more than seven hours in the Court, the Council has paid him a stunning €1,000 per hour in its campaign to try and defeat the Anti Bin Tax Campaign.

Cllr. Clare Daly said today: “We will fight these outrageous demands by Fingal County Council. Court costs of this magnitude are used to intimidate working class people from their campaign for taxation justice. However, we will continue to fight for taxation justice. The bin tax and stealth taxes generally will be important issues in the Local and European Elections.
