Harney’s Rant About "Anti–Americanism":
A Deliberate Diversion to Cover Chasm Between People and Government

Joe Higgins TD, Socialist Party

THE RANT by Tánaiste Mary Harney alleging “Anti-Americanism” among “hard left elements” in the anti war movement is a deliberate attempt to divert the attention of the public from the Government’s slavish policy of support for the war mongering of President Bush and Prime Minister Blair.

The term “Anti-Americanism” is meaningless. The anti war movement distinguishes between the American people and the rabid pro-war element grouped in the Bush Administration.

The anti war movement in Ireland is in complete solidarity with the tens of millions of American citizens who are utterly opposed to the Bush policy.

The fact is that the real policy of the Government is of craven subservience to the foreign policy of the Bush Government.

In order to cover the chasm between the large majority of the population in this State and the Government’s policy on Iraq, we are being subjected to the inane and vacuous insults such as the Tánaiste uttered in Limerick.
