A weekend of political discussion
Come to the Socialist Youth Summer Festival 2005

By Penny Gray, Socialist Youth Dublin

If you are opposed to poverty, war, deportations, racism and attacks on civil liberties and are open to a socialist alternative to these problems then we believe that the one political event that you should attend this year is the Socialist Youth Summer Festival (26th - 28th August).

Come to the Socialist Youth Summer Festival 2005It is a weekend of debate and discussion on various topics with speakers from the Make Poverty History and Bring Kunle Home Campaigns. Unless you live under a rock, you've heard of the anti G8 protests, which took place in Scotland in July. At the festival there will be a debate between Socialist Youth and Make Poverty History on how to end poverty in the third world.

The festival will be a weekend of politics and socialising and it will be attended by young people from Belfast, Strabane, Omagh, Enniskillen, Derry, Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Wexford and many other areas around Ireland.

The political discussions are aimed at informing, educating and also allowing you a forum for debate. This is the last burst of fun before hitting the books again, with soccer, music, BBQs and a chance to meet like-minded people from North and South. Book your place today!

The weekend of political discussion will take place from 26 – 28 August in Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow. If you are interested in socialism and finding out more about Socialist Youth then this weekend is an opportunity for you to meet like-minded young people from all over Ireland and to discuss politics in a relaxed environment.

This weekend is also an opportunity for Socialist Youth members, North and South to discuss, debate and educate ourselves on important current national and international issues, as well as significant historical events and theoretical questions.

Capitalism….

This year has seen the failure of the G8 to even half-heartedly tackle the problems of world poverty, climate change and debt, despite a quarter of a million people marching on the streets of Edinburgh. The bloody occupation of Iraq for oil, profit and US domination of the Middle East, is ongoing. Democratic rights are under attack around the world, from the shooting of the innocent man in the tube after the London bombings to draconian "anti-terror" legislation and repressive ASBOs.

…What’s the alternative?

As long as profit and big business dominates, workers’ and young people’s rights will be trampled all over. That’s why we stand for a socialist society, which means taking wealth and power out of the hands of the tiny minority who currently control it, and instead running society for people not profit. This weekend gives us an opportunity to discuss the key issues and challenges facing us:

- Why has the "Make Poverty History" campaign failed in its aim of making 2005 the year where poverty is eliminated?

- How can big business’ stranglehold on sport, be broken?

- How can the US occupation of Iraq be ended?

- How can we build a socialist movement of young people and workers to challenge the domination of the few with the power of the majority?

If you’re interested, then contact us either by phone or via E-mail (see below) and you will be contacted with further details as soon as possible.
