Hunger Strikers at Guantanamo Bay

Amy Bannon

Around 75 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay are currently on hunger strike in protest at inhuman conditions and treatment at the US army base.

Reports of torture, desecration of the Koran and sleep-deprivation at the camp are said to have sparked the present protest. Many of the prisoners have been imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay for over four and a half years and are not allowed any contact with the outside world while only ten prisoners have been charged.

There are approximately 460 prisoners in total detained at Guantanamo Bay. The Socialist Party calls for the immediate closure of Guantanamo and an end to the policy of imprisonment without trial.
