Pamphlet - We Are Workers Not Slaves: The Story of the GAMA Struggle

In 2005 a group of Turkish workers made history in Ireland when they took on their employer, Turkish-owned multinational construction giant GAMA. Assisted by the Socialist Party, whose members first exposed the scandalous wages and conditions being paid by GAMA to its Turkish workers, they engaged in a bitter and hard fought battle which eventually brought GAMA to heel.

Pamphlet €6/£4
"We Are Workers, Not Slaves" - The Story of the GAMA Struggle by Mick Barry

Revelations during the course of this struggle about the brutal exploitation of migrant workers, about the systematic theft of these workers’ wages by GAMA, and about the complicity of the Irish state and political establishment in, for years, turning a blind eye to what was happening, rocked Irish society at the time and will have lasting repercussions.

In making a stand against this modern day slavery, the GAMA workers, together with the Socialist Party, have struck a blow for the rights of migrant workers and workers generally. They have written one of the proudest chapters in Irish labour history.

We are Workers not Slaves can be bought from the Socialist Party offices for €6 / £4 - See below for ordering information.

DVD - The GAMA Strike: A Victory For All Workers

In 2005, the Socialist Party uncovered a major scandal of migrant worker exploitation. "A modern form of bonded labour" was how Joe Higgins, Socialist Party TD described the regime for Turkish workers at the multinational construction company, GAMA, which came to Ireland following an invitation from the Irish government.

DVD €10/£7

This DVD documentary captures the historic struggle waged by the GAMA workers for justice. It shines a light on the gross exploitation that is the dark side of Ireland’s economic growth. It demonstrates that rather than migrant workers being used to undermine pay and conditions, with organisation, action and solidarity decent pay and conditions can be won for all workers.

A premiere has been organised for Thursday 27 July in Wynn’s Hotel, Abbey Street in Dublin where the first ever public screening of this heroic story will take place. There will be short presentations by a GAMA striker and Joe Higgins TD. Tickets are limited so order in advance by contacting - see below for contact details.

Tickets cost €5. Copies of the DVD will be available for sale on the night for €10. We encourage all workers, trade unionists, activists and campaigners to come along to what promises to be a very enjoyable night.

The DVD is also available direct from the Socialist Party offices north and south. See below for ordering information.
