Socialist Party election candidates

The Socialist

The Socialist Party has to date selected two candidates to stand in the Assembly election in the North, Jim Barbour in South Belfast and Tommy Black in East Belfast, and is actively considering standing in a number of other areas.

Jim Barbour is a National Executive member of the Fire Brigades Union and is one of the most prominent trade unionists in Northern Ireland. He is currently at the forefront of a campaign to prevent the closure of a number of fire stations. He is a spokesperson for the We Won’t Pay Campaign.

Tommy Black, a school caretaker, has been an active NIPSA and community activist in East Belfast for many years. Tommy is a key organiser of the We Won’t Pay Campaign in his local area of Bloomfield and across East Belfast.

Socialist Party candidates will use the election to make the case for organised mass non-payment of water charges, based on active groups in every area.

Our election campaign will also feature a range of other issues that are important to working people, such as opposition to privatisation, and will argue the case for independent working class politics in Northern Ireland and for the building of a mass, anti-sectarian political alternative.
