FEBRUARY was a day that made history. The 150,000 who marched in Dublin,
joined millions around the world in sending a clear message to Bush and
Blair - we don't want your bloody war. In Ireland demonstrators also told
Ahern and Harney to stop the US military from using Shannon.

|
| THERE
IS no money to maintain acute hospital services in Omagh. Or in Lisburn,
despite its new "city" status. Or in Whiteabbey or Mid Ulster.
Nor is there money to modernise the water service. So the government are
about to introduce water charges. |
|
| THE
PUBLIC stand taken by the government that it won't heed the thousnds who
marched on 15 February in terms of withdrawing from the US military the
right to land and refuel at Shannon Airport, poses the need to escalate
the campaign. Both the scale of the Feb 15 march and the Irish Times poll
published on the same day confirm that the majority of the Irish public
are against the use of Shannon by the US military under any circumstances.

ON
THE day the first bombs drop on Iraq, school students around the world
will come out on strikes, walkouts and demonstrations to show that the
majority of young people are opposed to this war. In Ireland, we will
be organising similar activities. Make sure you and your school are
involved as we make history.

|
| It
seems that even Ireland is not exempt from the war industry. In 2002 the
military export industry was valued in the region of €34.42 million
to the Irish economy. The Irish government even increased the number of
export licences by 22% up to 73 in 2001. |

| AS
BUSH gears up for war he is making a last attempt to gain the fig leaf
of United Nations (UN) support for his invasion. Some anti-war activists
place a great deal of faith in the UN. A number will probably abandon
opposition to the war in the event of a UN resolution in favour of military
action. |
|
| ON
12 February La Paz, Bolivia was wracked by anti-government protests and
strikes which resulted in up to 30 dead, at least 100 injured and 14 government
buildings gutted by fire. |
|
| MORE
THAN 10,000 school students went on strike with university and apprentice
students joining the protests in Stuttgart on 25 February. The strike
was part of a national day of action organised by Youth Against the War
with demosntrations and protests in about ten cities. |
|
| AS
THE battle over the bin tax heats up with the government's plans to introduce
legislation to enable local authorities to leave behind the bins of those
who haven't paid the unjust bin tax, Fingal's County Manager has thrown
the issue of privatisation into the fray.
