Trinity
Socialist Youth have called a major campaign in Trinity against
fascism and racism. This has resulted out of the fact that the College
Philosophical society "The Phil" has invited Tony Wentworth
BNP Youth organiser to speak at its yearly debate on the politics
of the far right on November 20th.
In
response Trinity SY are calling for no platform for the Nazi BNP
and are arguing that Wentworth is not interested in debate but only
in organising people around his fascist ideas
Who
are the British National Party?
The
BNP are a neo-nazi organisation. They believe in expelling all black
people, Asians, refugees and asylum seekers from Britain. They have
terrorised black and Asian communities and are responsible for racist
murders and brutal racist assaults. They have also attacked trade
unionists and socialists. The organiser in question is a denier
of the holocaust and is on record as making disgusting anti-Semitic
remarks. He is not coming here to engage in polite debate but rather
to organise a Nazi group here in Ireland.
Groups
such as the BNP represent a major threat to the democratic rights
of workers, young people and immigrants. Socialist Youth believes
that freedom of speech is not a right that should be given to those
who seek to destroy this right. In no way can Nazis be allowed to
get a foothold in this country. If fascists like the BNP controlled
society then every democratic right would be banned including freedom
of speech as it was in Nazi Germany
How
the Nazis can be stopped
On
several occasions in the past when similar Nazi organisers have
tried to speak and organise they have been stopped in their tracks
through mass mobilisations of ordinary people. In 1999 when David
Irving a well known fascist and Holocaust denier was similarly invited
by the UCC philosophy society he was stopped by a demonstration
of more than 600 people. In 1993 a united front of 50,000 socialists,
anti-fascist activists and trade unionists shut down the BNP HQ
in Welling, London. These examples show how Nazi organisations can
and should be halted.
'By
any means necessary'
Socialist
Youth is organising to stop this BNP fascist. This can be done through
united action between socialists, anti-racists, trade union activists
and young people. Direct action is necessary to stop this fascist
from speaking. As Malcolm
X once said we will stop them 'By any means necessary'.
Racism,
fascism and capitalism
The
right wing media and the Fianna Fail/PD government have tried to
scapegoat refugees and asylum seekers for the social problems that
exist today such as the housing crisis. We believe that this right
wing government is ultimately responsible for racist ideas in our
society. A similar scape-goating across Europe by various right
wing governments has helped neo-Nazi and extreme right wing parties
gain support for their ideas. Capitalism, a system based on the
drive for profit, is absolutely incapable of providing for the needs
of ordinary people. It is this system that creates the breeding
ground for the ideas of fascist organisations to gain an echo in
society.
Socialist Youth believes that we have to confront Nazis like the
BNP on the streets in order to push them back. Ultimately however
it is only by fighting for a socialist future where the basic needs
of ordinary people are put before profit that the roots of racism
and fascism can be smashed!
What
is Socialist Youth
Socialist
Youth fight on a wide range of issues such as opposition to low
pay, racism and war and link this fight with the need for a socialist
society. We believe that such a society where the resources would
be publicly owned, democratically controlled and planned by the
majority of those who create the wealth could put an end to the
poverty and exploitation that exists here in Ireland and internationally.
Young people have a crucial role in bringing such a society into
existence. Therefore we urge you to join us in the fight for a socialist
future and join Socialist Youth today!
